National recognition

The Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute offers patients and families access to one of New England's most experienced programs for esophageal cancer treatment. We offer a collaborative, caring approach to the diagnosis and treatment of patients with confirmed or suspected esophageal cancer.

Consistently ranked as one of the best in the country by U.S. News & World Report, we provide the latest, most effective treatments including many innovative approaches to clinical care and promising new therapies.

Expertise in diagnosis and staging

Accurate diagnosis and staging (how early or advanced cancer is) are key to effective treatment. Our renowned pathologists and radiologists subspecialize in thoracic cancers and use advanced diagnostic tools, including:

  • 4D CT scans
  • Endoscopic esophageal biopsies
  • Endoscopic tumor resections (EMR and ESD)
  • Esophageal ultrasounds
  • Minimally invasive laparoscopic evaluations
  • Molecular tests for new and standard biomarkers
  • MRIs
  • Nuclear medicine tests, such as PET scans
Leading-edge medical treatments

Treatment plans may include:

  • Chemotherapy
  • Targeted therapies
  • Immune therapies
  • Clinical trials
  • Other advanced drug treatments based on tumor biology

These therapies are designed to kill cancer growth and may help reduce side effects compared with standard treatments in some cases.

Advanced radiation therapies

Our radiation oncologists use leading-edge techniques to effectively deliver radiation to tumors, while limiting exposure to surrounding healthy tissue. They offer:

  • External beam radiation therapy: Radiation delivered from outside the body
  • Respiratory gating: Technology that monitors tumor movement during breathing to improve precision
Excellence in surgical care
The expertise of our surgical team has made Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute a major referral center for complex thoracic (chest) conditions, including esophageal cancer. We offer minimally invasive and robotic esophagectomies, which enables us to remove tumors with less pain and shorter recovery times. We’re a high-volume esophagectomy center, performing more than 150 resections each year.
Preventing and detecting esophageal cancer early

Gastroenterologists at Mass General Brigham help identify risk factors such as Barrett’s esophagus, a condition caused by long-term acid reflux that can increase the risk of esophageal cancer.

We monitor patients for Barrett’s esophagus through regular endoscopic screening and surveillance. These exams help detect precancerous changes early, when treatment can be most effective and may help prevent cancer from developing.

Esophageal cancer treatments

Esophageal cancer develops in the esophagus, the muscular tube connecting your throat and stomach. Our specialists treat all types of esophageal cancer using advanced medical and surgical treatments.

Our cancer specialists

At every step, your care is guided by a multidisciplinary team of cancer specialists. This may include medical, surgical, and radiation oncology physicians, advanced practice providers, radiologists, pathologists, oncology nurses, nurse navigators, and more. You may also work with dietitians, genetic counselors, social workers, and mental health professionals.

Patient story

From a diagnosis of esophageal cancer to a walk down the aisle

When Mike Kaelblein was diagnosed with stage 3 esophageal cancer, he turned to Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute for care. His multidisciplinary team used emerging clinical trial data to design a personalized treatment plan combining chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. The approach led to a complete response, with no active cancer found after surgery. Today, Mike is back to work, spending time with his family, and moving forward with confidence.
