Our approach to polio rehabilitation
With a combination of highly trained clinicians and the most advanced rehabilitation treatments and research available, we’re here to make a difference in your life and help pave the road to wellness.
Personalized rehabilitation planning for polio survivors
The IRCP is designed to meet the needs of polio survivors who can travel to our facility. For those coming from out of town, we offer coordinated appointments over several consecutive days. For local and regional patients, visits may be scheduled weekly or every other week based on your needs.
To support your health and function, our team works with you to:
- Provide education on preventing complications related to polio and its late effects
- Evaluate new or changing weakness
- Improve mobility, including walking and daily activities
- Reduce fatigue and pain
- Develop a safe, appropriate exercise program
- Teach energy conservation strategies
- Assess the need for home or workplace modifications
What to expect
- Day 1: During the first day of treatment, you will consult with a physician and evaluations by the polio team's occupational and physical therapist. An evaluation by a speech and language pathologist may also be recommended.
- Day 2: The second day of treatment typically includes diagnostic testing such as electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies.
- Day 3: The third day of treatment typically includes a team conference and physical and occupational therapy.
Your team conference
An important part of the IRCP treatment program is the team conference. During the conference, you and your family will meet with team members involved in your care. The purpose of the meeting is to ensure cohesive treatment, answer questions, and help you plan for the future.
