Our approach to addiction care in pregnancy

We provide coordinated, evidence-based care that prioritizes safety, continuity, and long-term stability through pregnancy, postpartum, and early parenting.
A multidisciplinary team

We collaborate with clinicians from a variety of fields who work together to care for patients. Our team includes specialists trained in:

  • Obstetrics and Maternal Fetal Medicine
  • Addiction
  • Family medicine
  • Pediatrics
  • Psychiatry during pregnancy and postpartum (after birth)
  • Social work
  • Peer recovery
  • Resource specialization
Care during pregnancy

Care is designed around the realities of pregnancy and recovery. You receive integrated prenatal and addiction care, including:

  • Coordination with primary care providers
  • High-risk obstetrics and family medicine
  • Coordination with opioid treatment programs (including methadone treatment programs)
  • Medication treatment for substance use disorder (such as buprenorphine or naltrexone)
  • Perinatal psychiatry
  • Mental health care
  • Peer support and counseling
  • Social services and resourcing

Our team helps reduce barriers to care and coordinates with community programs so you can focus on your health, stability, and parenting goals.

Postpartum care

Our care continues after your baby is born. We support you with:

  • Medication treatment for substance use disorder (such as buprenorphine or naltrexone)
  • Behavioral health therapy and counseling
  • Care coordination
  • Family planning and contraception consultation
  • Connection to primary care
  • Parenting education
  • Peer support
  • Psychiatry, including medication management when appropriate
  • Social services and support for housing, food, and financial stressors
Care for infants through age 2

We support you and your baby through age 2 to help your child get the care they need, including:

  • Specialty care coordination when needed (for example, developmental or infectious disease specialists)
  • Breastfeeding support
  • Monitoring and care for neonatal withdrawal symptoms
  • Pediatric primary care affiliated with Mass General Brigham for Children
  • Referral to early intervention services when helpful
Recovery portfolio and family care planning
During pregnancy, our social work team can help document recovery progress in a structured summary called a recovery portfolio. It includes treatment goals, strengths, support networks, and a plan to support family safety. When needed, this documentation can help meet federal requirements and support communication with involved agencies.
Support for partners and families

Recovery and early parenting affect the whole family. Partners and other children may have access to:

  • Addiction treatment referrals and support
  • Parenting education
  • Pediatric care (routine and urgent) for other children
  • Primary and specialty medical care
  • Psychiatry and behavioral health services
  • Social support and resource navigation
We provide evidence-based medical and mental health care for women with substance use disorder and their infants. Care continues through the first two years after birth to support parent, child, and family well-being.
