A center of excellence

Huntington’s disease is an inherited condition that causes progressive changes in the brain, affecting movement, thinking, and mood. These changes can lead to involuntary movements, difficulty with coordination and walking, and changes in behavior and cognition.

Mass General Brigham is home to one of the first Huntington’s Disease Society of America Centers of Excellence, reflecting our commitment to comprehensive care and ongoing research to advance treatment.

Our approach to Huntington’s disease care

We provide multidisciplinary care along with access to clinical and translational research, including clinical trials of emerging therapies for Huntington’s disease.
An interdisciplinary approach to Huntington’s disease care

Our clinic uses a team-based approach to care for people with Huntington’s disease and their families. During a single visit, patients receive a comprehensive evaluation from a neurologist along with assessments from physical, occupational, and speech therapists, as well as specialists in nutrition and social work.

We develop an individualized care plan with recommendations for follow-up and community-based services when appropriate. Visits may last two to three hours to allow for a thorough evaluation, with follow-up typically recommended every six months.

Understanding symptoms and risk factors for early intervention

Huntington’s disease is an inherited condition that causes progressive changes in the brain, affecting movement, thinking, and mood. Symptoms often begin between ages 30 and 50.

If one parent has Huntington’s disease, each child has a 50% chance of inheriting the gene. A person who inherits the gene will develop symptoms at some point in their life.

Symptoms can include:

  • Changes in personality, mood, or depression
  • Memory problems and impaired judgment
  • Unsteady walking and involuntary movements (chorea)
  • Slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, and weight loss
Access to clinical and translational research
We offer patients and their families opportunities to participate in research. We are involved in both observational studies, which do not require taking a study drug and help us better understand disease onset and progression, and interventional clinical trials, which evaluate new potential treatments.

Our neuroscience specialists

Your care is coordinated by a team of specialists in neurology, neurosurgery, advanced brain imaging, and nursing. Depending on your condition, your care team may also include experts in neuropsychology, rehabilitation, genetics, social work, and mental health. This team works together to understand your neurological condition from every angle and develop a care plan tailored to you.

Neuroscience clinical trials and research

Our research is shaping the future of neuroscience care. We offer access to clinical trials and emerging therapies, including treatments that may not yet be widely available. Eligibility depends on a person’s diagnosis, treatment history, and more. Explore our research and clinical trials or talk with your care team to learn about available options.
