Parkinson's Disease Program
Multidisciplinary care for Parkinson’s disease
Our Parkinson’s disease specialists focus on slowing progression and helping you maintain independence. We unite experts from neuroscience, psychiatry, rehabilitation, and other disciplines to provide coordinated, whole-person care.
Part of the Mass General Brigham Neuroscience Institute, we are home to two Parkinson's Foundation Centers of Excellence. Our clinicians help shape national standards of care through leadership roles with the Michael J. Fox Foundation and the Parkinson Study Group.
Our approach to Parkinson’s disease care
Your care team includes:
- Neurologists
- Surgeons
- Radiologists
- Psychiatrists or psychologists
- Rehab therapists
We work together to address motor symptoms, mood and cognitive changes, sleep issues, swallowing concerns, and more. Care is delivered in outpatient and inpatient rehab settings. Across all locations, your team provides coordinated support to help you maintain independence.
Treatment will depend on your:
- Age
- Overall health
- Medical history
- PD stage and prognosis
Most people start with medications, which your clinician will adjust to help control symptoms. If medications are not effective, we may recommend surgical options such as deep brain stimulation (DBS), which can significantly reduce motor symptoms for many patients.
Because Parkinson’s disease affects the whole body, rehabilitation is a key part of care. Exercise and therapy can help improve mobility, strength, balance, speech, swallowing, and daily function. We provide:
- Speech therapy
- Physical therapy
- Occupational therapy
- Nutrition counseling
- Exercise and wellness plans designed for PD
