Our approach to midwifery care
Our holistic approach for women and birthing persons is rooted in the fact that childbirth is a normal, natural process. We use the latest evidence-based practices and interdisciplinary support if needed and always include the voice of the patient.
Prenatal care
Midwives provide routine prenatal care throughout pregnancy. Many women work with the same midwife through the entire pregnancy journey. Your care includes physical exams, recommended screening and diagnostic tests, connection to resources, and education. The midwives support you and your family to remain informed, empowered, confident, and prepared for childbirth.
Midwifery care during labor and delivery
At Mass General Brigham, our midwives offer physical and emotional support and a variety of pain management options during labor and delivery. We respect your personal birth preferences. We utilize a team approach to allow you and your baby to stay safe and healthy. If complications arise, we keep you informed and consult with attending physicians and specialists. All decisions are made with you to decide the next steps.
Postpartum care
Our Midwifery Program supports you after birth, both during your hospital stay and once you return home. Postpartum care includes education for warning signs, 24-hour access, breastfeeding guidance, emotional support, physical health assessments, and family planning and contraception counseling.
Family planning and contraception
Our midwives provide family planning support to help you make informed decisions about your reproductive rights. We offer education on pre-pregnancy counseling and pregnancy options once you become pregnant. The midwives guide you to choose the contraceptive options that work best for you—such as natural family planning, barrier methods, hormonal approaches, long-acting reversible contraceptives, or surgical options.
Routine gynecological care
Our midwives provide comprehensive gynecological care to support lifelong health and wellness. During well-woman visits, we conduct thorough physical exams, screen for infections and health concerns, discuss contraception options, and address any questions you may have about your health. If we identify anything that requires specialized care, we'll connect you with specialists and coordinate your follow-up.
Community-based, accessible care
Our nurse-midwives provide care at nine community health center locations in six Boston neighborhoods and at Mass General Brigham. Each center offers personalized, family-centered prenatal care in English, Spanish, French, Cape Verdean Creole, and Haitian Kreyol.
The Mass General Brigham midwives also provide specialized care to postpartum patients via community health vans through the Mobile Postpartum Care Unit.
