Dr. Paul Biddinger named emergency medicine physician of the year
Paul Biddinger, MD, Medical Director for Emergency Preparedness at Mass General Brigham, has been named the 2021 Emergency Medicine Physician of the Year by the Massachusetts College of Emergency Physicians (MACEP). This award recognizes and honors an emergency medicine physician who has made significant contributions to the advancement of emergency medicine in Massachusetts.
“So many across Mass General Brigham and the Commonwealth have benefitted enormously from Paul’s leadership and expertise. From active duty as an emergency physician in the Emergency Department at Mass General Hospital, to system Incident Command and state government, Paul has immersed himself in every facet of the work that was needed to get our communities and providers through the pandemic. Paul has exhibited the highest levels of commitment and dedication to our patients and colleagues, while maintaining an undeterred good humor during even the most unthinkable situations,” says Ron Walls, MD, Chief Operating Officer of Mass General Brigham.
In addition to his role as the Director for Emergency Preparedness at Mass General Brigham, Dr. Biddinger serves as the Director of the Emergency Preparedness Research, Evaluation and Practice (EPREP) Program at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health, and holds appointments at Harvard Medical School and at the Chan School. Dr. Biddinger serves as a special advisor to the Massachusetts Medical Society’s Committee on Preparedness and serves as a medical officer for the MA-1 Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT) in the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) in the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
Dr. Biddinger is an active researcher in the field of emergency preparedness and has lectured nationally and internationally on topics of preparedness and disaster medicine. He has authored numerous articles and book chapters on multiple topics related to emergency medical services and disaster medicine. He has also responded to numerous prior incidents, including Hurricane Katrina, the Boston Marathon bombings, Superstorm Sandy, the 2015 Nepal earthquakes and others.
Due to the pandemic, this prestigious award was given virtually at the MACEP Annual Meeting. Mass General Brigham congratulates Dr. Biddinger on this well-deserved achievement.
