Mass General Brigham announces Enterprise Anesthesiology Service

3 minute read

Mass General Brigham announced the launch of our Enterprise Anesthesiology Service, which will enhance our ability to provide our patients with consistently best-in-class anesthesiology care across Mass General Brigham. This enterprise service, with a single, common governance and executive leadership team, will enable our system to build upon the academic and clinical excellence of our two great departments of anesthesiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital to deliver seamlessly integrated anesthesiology care for our patients across the system.

Members of the executive leadership team include:

MGB James P. Rathmell, MD, newly appointed Chief of Enterprise Anesthesiology for Mass General Brigham, who will lead efforts to set the vision and strategic direction for Enterprise Anesthesiology, starting July 1, 2022. Dr. Rathmell will continue to serve as Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital, and the Leroy D. Vandam Professor of Anaesthesia at Harvard Medical School. He will maintain the full spectrum of chair responsibilities at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, including overseeing day-to-day clinical activities for the department while working closely with other members of the executive leadership team to establish and implement clinical integration priorities, advance quality and safety standards, enhance patient care and experience and improve faculty experience for the enterprise service.
MGB Seun Johnson-Akeju, MD, Chief of the Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Henry Isaiah Dorr Associate Professor of Research and Teaching in Anaesthetics and Anaesthesia at Harvard Medical School, who will continue to lead all aspects of academic and clinical activities for the department at Massachusetts General Hospital while working as a member of the Enterprise Anesthesiology executive leadership team to establish and implement clinical integration and other priorities across the system.
MGB O’Neil Britton, MD, Senior Vice President of Operations and Associate Chief Operating Officer for Mass General Brigham, whose work includes enhancing operational effectiveness and service to patients across the system. As a member of this leadership team, Dr. Britton will help guide and support the alignment of clinical operations across Enterprise Anesthesiology, consistent with the Mass General Brigham strategic plan.

With Dr. Rathmell, Dr. Johnson-Akeju, and Dr. Britton, we have a strong and collaborative leadership team to drive the optimization of anesthesiology care across Mass General Brigham. Preserving and enhancing the unique strengths of each individual department, they will collectively apply best practices to enhance the experience for both our patients and our faculty, while supporting our vision of being an integrated healthcare system with the patient at the center.
