Mass General Brigham Faculty Elected to National Academy of Medicine

Mass General Brigham today announced the election of several of its distinguished faculty members to the National Academy of Medicine (NAM), one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine. Their election recognizes exceptional professional achievement and a steadfast commitment to advancing medical science and healthcare.

Mass General Brigham-affiliated faculty elected to NAM include:

  • Facundo Damian Batista, Ph.D., FMedSci, scientific and associate director, Ragon Institute of Mass General Brigham, MIT, and Harvard; Phillip and Susan Ragon Professor, Department of Biology, MIT; faculty, Department of Immunology, Harvard Medical School. For his work in unraveling the biology of antibody-producing B cells and contributions to vaccine development and monoclonal antibody therapies for malaria.

  • Joel F. Habener, M.D., Honorary Physician, Massachusetts General Hospital, Professor of Medicine (Emeritus), Harvard Medical School, for the discovery of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and its transformative role in treating type 2 diabetes and obesity.

  • Seun Johnson-Akeju, M.D., M.M.Sc., M.B.A., chair, Department of Anesthesiology, Mass General Brigham; Dr. Henry Isaiah Dorr Professor, Harvard Medical School. For leadership in research on anesthetics and perioperative stressors, bridging lab discoveries with clinical trials.

  • Sabrina Paganoni, M.D., Ph.D., Robert H. Brown Jr., PhilD, MD, Endowed Chair in Neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH); co-director, Neurological Clinical Research Institute, associate professor, Harvard Medical School. For paradigm-shifting ALS research, national trial infrastructure development, and precision medicine advancements.

NAM elected 90 regular members and 10 international members during its annual meeting, bringing its total membership to more than 2,500. Members are selected by current NAM members through a rigorous process that honors individuals who have made major contributions to the advancement of the medical sciences, healthcare, and public health.
