Mass General Brigham Names Sunil Eappen, MD, MBA, Interim President of Brigham and Women’s Hospital

Anne Klibanski, MD, President and CEO of Mass General Brigham, today announced the appointment of Sunil “Sunny” Eappen, MD, MBA, as Interim President of Brigham and Women’s Hospital, effective March 1. Dr. Eappen currently serves as Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer at Brigham and Women’s. 

“Dr. Eappen’s vast experience and knowledge of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and our system make him the ideal person to lead Brigham and Women’s during this transition,” said Dr. Klibanski. “He is a widely respected leader at BWH and throughout Mass General Brigham and has been integral to advancing our strategy. He has led numerous efforts focused on improving clinical care and the patient experience at BWH and across the system.” 

Dr. Eappen rejoined Brigham and Women’s Hospital in 2018 from Mass Eye and Ear, where he served as Chief Medical Officer and Chief of Anesthesiology. Prior to his role at Mass Eye and Ear, Dr. Eappen held multiple clinical and administrative leadership roles at Brigham and Women’s from 2002-2009. 

Dr. Eappen earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics and computer science from the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign, his MD from the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine and an MBA from the Yale University School of Management. He completed his residency in anesthesiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Over the past two years, hospitals across the Mass General Brigham system have been united in building a stronger, more integrated academic health care system focused on the needs of patients in our communities and people around the world. The next leader of Brigham and Women’s Hospital will be instrumental in advancing the realization of this vision. 

Dr. Eappen will work closely with current Brigham and Women’s President Betsy Nabel, MD, leading up to March 1, when Nabel will formally step down from her role to pursue opportunities in the biotech sector.

The search process will be aligned with Mass General Brigham’s United Against Racism priority. We are committed to developing a diverse search committee and slate of candidates for consideration as we chart a course for the future of the hospital. Our leadership toward ensuring the most equitable and diverse environment—for our patients and colleagues across the system—will be the very foundation for our success as a premier healthcare provider nationally and internationally. 

Dr. Klibanski will immediately begin the search process for permanent leadership at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. The search is expected to take several months.
