Renowned Clinician, Researcher, Innovator to Lead Largest Private Employer

Dr. Anne Klibanksi, President and CEO of Mass General Brigham

The Partners HealthCare Board of Directors has named Anne Klibanski, MD, President and Chief Executive Officer of Partners HealthCare. Dr. Klibanski becomes the first female chief executive of Partners HealthCare, the state’s largest private employer, with 75,000 employees. Dr. Klibanski was named Interim President and CEO in February.

“Over the past several months, it has become increasingly clear to each member of the board that Anne is the ideal leader for Partners as we move forward together as a truly integrated system,” said Scott Sperling, Chair of the Partners Board of Directors. “Anne has done an outstanding job of managing this large and complex system as we continuously work to provide care of exceptional quality at the lowest possible cost. Her long and extraordinary experience and leadership in research and teaching is so important to a system that is the global leader in life sciences research and the educator of the next generation of doctors and health system leaders. Her commitment to serving the unmet need of our local communities is crucial. It became obvious to us that any search was going to lead us right back to Anne.”

As Interim President and CEO, Dr. Klibanski oversaw several major initiatives including Partners 2.0 and a number of high-level board task forces, which are aimed at examining a range of crucial strategic and operational issues at Partners. The goal of this work is to ensure that Partners is optimally organized to deliver upon its mission in an efficient and integrated manner. In recent months under Dr. Klibanski’s leadership, those task forces have completed their work, and implementation of their recommendations will begin in the coming weeks and months.

“Partners HealthCare is a great organization, but I believe we can be even better,” said Dr. Klibanski. "In recent months, members from hospital boards across the system have started to work together in a way we have not seen before at Partners. I am honored to have the opportunity to realize the full potential we have to transform health care and make it better for patients and families everywhere."

Dr. Klibanski succeeds Dr. David Torchiana, who had served in the role since March 2015 and announced his plans to retire earlier this year.

Prior to being named Interim President and CEO, Dr. Klibanski served as Chief Academic Officer for Partners, a position she has held since 2012. In that role, Dr. Klibanski maintained leadership responsibilities spanning research, teaching, and other activities. She led multiple system-wide efforts aimed at clinical and educational collaboration and oversaw the Partners research enterprise of more than $1.8 billion annually. As Chief Academic Officer, Dr. Klibanski oversaw personalized medicine; Partners Clinical Trials Office; Partners Innovation, which includes commercialization and licensing; research data science/digital health and research subject protection, as well as graduate medical education and continuing professional development. Dr. Klibanski also served as the Chief of Neuroendocrine at MGH and is recognized internationally for her high impact research in neuroendocrine disorders and pituitary tumors.

A new Chief Academic Officer will be appointed by Dr. Klibanski.

Dr. Klibanski received her B.A., magna cum laude with honors in literature from Barnard College and her M.D. from New York University Medical Center. She is the Laurie Carrol Guthart Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and an Academic Dean for Partners at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Klibanski is a recognized expert in the field of translational research focusing on rare endocrine diseases and serves on the MGH General Executive Committee, the Board of Albireo Pharmaceuticals, Scientific Advisory Board of Crinetics and the Board of Partners International.

She is an elected member of the Association of American Physicians and the American Society of Clinical Investigation; recipient of the Clinical Endocrinology Trust Medal – British Endocrine Society and the Endocrine Society Clinical Investigator Award.

Earlier this year, Dr. Klibanski was recognized by Modern Healthcare as one of 2019’s Top 25 Women Leaders in Healthcare.
