Mass General Brigham

Fellowship in Emergency Medical Services

This one-year fellowship prepares physicians for leadership in emergency medical services.

The Mass General Brigham Fellowship in Emergency Medicine Services (EMS) is a one-year, comprehensive training program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Our mission—aligned with that of Mass General Brigham—is to serve the community by enhancing patient care, teaching, and research, while leading an integrated healthcare system. Through broad exposure to diverse communities and clinical settings, with a focus on clinical research and innovation, the program gives physicians the knowledge and skills they need to become board-certified EMS physicians and to pursue fulfilling, impactful careers in EMS medical oversight.

Requirements

Applicants must be graduates of an ACGME-accredited emergency medicine training program and be in good standing at the time of matriculation.

Curriculum

The Mass General Brigham Fellowship in EMS provides a comprehensive experience across the many facets of out-of-hospital care. Fellows will take on leadership roles in several EMS agencies, gaining essential experience in EMS medical direction.

The curriculum includes:

  • Dedicated research time
  • Academic support
  • A weekly didactic curriculum
  • Protected elective time to explore individual interests

All of this helps form the backbone of a well-rounded academic EMS physician.

The core EMS experience is built through service on the medical direction teams of both municipal and fire-based EMS systems in the greater Boston area. Fellows also spend two weeks on Matha’s Vineyard, working with a rural EMS agency, and participate in an aeromedical rotation in collaboration with Boston MedFlight. Additional opportunities include event medicine, tactical and operational EMS, and mobile integrated health.

Clinical setting

EMS Fellows will work clinically in their core specialty of emergency medicine at:

  • Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA, an urban Level 1 trauma with an emergency medicine residency program
  • Newton-Wellesley Hospital, an affiliated community hospital

Fellows will split clinical time approximately evenly across sites.

Research

All EMS fellows will complete a scholarly project as a core component of the EMS fellowship. Fellows will work closely with core EMS and research faculty to identify a topic of interest. Fellows will also participate in a dedicated research didactic series. Protected research time is provided as part of the fellowship curriculum.
