Mass General Brigham Hospitals Named Among Nation’s Best by U.S. News & World Report

Mass General Brigham clinical services and hospitals were named among the best in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. Six hospitals within the system earned top national rankings, while the system’s institutes and clinical departments were also recognized for world-class specialty care. The rankings are a validation of Mass General Brigham’s sustained focus on high-quality care and patient outcomes.

The system’s founding members – Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) – were each named to the “Best Hospitals” Honor Roll, representing the top 20 hospitals in the nation. The system’s three Institutes in Cancer, Heart and Vascular, and Neuroscience also earned high marks.

Mass General Brigham’s three specialty academic hospitals – McLean, Mass Eye and Ear, and Spaulding Rehabilitation – also earned top rankings in their respective specialties. This year, Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital (BWFH) also earned a national ranking (in Diabetes and Endocrinology), demonstrating the strength of the system’s Community Division.

Mass General Brigham’s first-ever unified quality strategy, For Every Patient, is guiding the system’s approach to improving patient outcomes, which is anchored in high reliability and driven by a relentless focus on data and outcomes.

As U.S. News & World Report evolves its approach to focus more on these same outcomes, Mass General Brigham continues to perform at a high level. For the first time, this year’s rankings in Cardiology, Heart, and Vascular Surgery do not consider physician reputation, instead focusing primarily on 41 outcome measures. Amidst these methodology changes, Mass General Brigham’s net improvement in this category validates the system’s quality approach within its Heart and Vascular Institute.

Community Division Performance:

Several Mass General Brigham community hospitals have also earned honors as high performers in several medical specialties and treatments:

Newton-Wellesley Hospital ranked #6 in the Boston Metro Area and #7 in Massachusetts (both tied with Salem Hospital). Newton-Wellesley was also recognized as High Performing in 14 procedures and conditions: back surgery (spinal fusion); COPD; colon cancer surgery; diabetes; heart arrhythmia; heart failure; hip fracture; hip replacement; kidney failure; knee replacement; leukemia, lymphoma & myeloma; lung cancer surgery; pneumonia; and prostate cancer surgery.

Salem Hospital ranked #6 in the Boston Metro Area and #7 in Massachusetts (both tied with Newton-Wellesley Hospital). Salem was also recognized as High Performing in Diabetes and Endocrinology; Geriatrics; and Pulmonology & Lung Surgery, as well as 11 procedures and conditions: COPD, colon cancer surgery, diabetes, heart arrhythmia; heart attack; heart failure; hip replacement; kidney failure; lung cancer surgery; pacemaker implantation; and pneumonia.

Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital ranked #8 in the Boston Metro Area, #9 in Massachusetts and was nationally ranked in Diabetes and Endocrinology. BWFH was recognized as High Performing in Orthopedics and in eight procedures and conditions: COPD, diabetes, heart arrhythmia, heart failure, hip replacement, kidney failure, knee replacement, and pneumonia.

Cooley Dickinson Hospital was rated as High Performing in 3 procedures and conditions: hip replacement; knee replacement; and pneumonia.
