PHS staff is available to assist in assessments and, where appropriate, interventions. Communications with PHS are confidential under state law, and chemical dependency cases have additional protection under federal law.

Faculty development

The ACGME requirements go beyond having faculty attend an occasional formal lecture. They should be didactic and experiential and include the acquisition of knowledge and skills in teaching, professionalism, and learning how to incorporate Practice-based Learning and Improvement, Systems-based Practice, and Interpersonal and Communication skills into their teaching. Activities should be monitored and recorded.

The components of a faculty development program can include the following, but it is best to have faculty design the program to meet the greatest need.

  1. Mentoring program
  2. Leadership program
  3. Instruction (didactic and workshops)
    • Promotion and tenure
      • Building a portfolio
      • Criteria
      • Developing a plan
    • Teaching
      • Adult learning principles
      • Running an effective journal club
      • Bed side education
      • Ambulatory education
      • Simulation teaching
    • Speaking
      • Giving effective feedback
      • PowerPoint presentations
      • The 5 minute lecture
    • Writing
      • Developing a curriculum
      • Submitting an IRB proposal
      • Submitting a grant proposal
      • Writing for publication
    • Career development
    • Work-life balance
    • How to assess and evaluate

Faculty should develop their own career plan and work with a mentor to design a workable path to accomplish their goals. Faculty should develop professional contacts and work with those contacts to advance their careers. Mentors should be able to assist faculty members to achieve academic advancement as well as help them develop a healthy work/life balance.
