Dietary guidance and meal plans for female athletes

Mass General Brigham Women’s Sports Medicine specialists offer nutrition consultations customized for female athletes. Learn the right way to fuel your body when recovering from an injury, boost your energy levels by identifying and fixing nutrient deficiencies in your diet, and use food to strategically optimize your athletic performance. Our team of registered dieticians can help you define and reach your nutrition goals.

Female athletes’ nutrition needs are different than those of male athletes. Your nutrition needs as an athlete change depending on the type of sport or activity you engage in, the position you play, your training experience and timeline, and where you are in relation to the playing season. Through this program, you’ll learn the unique mix of foods, drinks, and supplements that can best support your athletic performance and recovery.

How can the women’s sports nutrition program help female athletes?

The Sports Nutrition Program for Female Athletes can help women and girls address:

  • Athletic performance and recovery fueling
  • Injury rehabilitation
  • Post-operative rehabilitation
  • Return-to-sport following surgery, injury, or illness
  • Energy deficiency and fatigue
  • Nutrient deficiencies and anemia
  • Restrictive dieting/eating habits
  • Pre-existing cardiovascular and gastrointestinal conditions
  • Muscle/strength building and body composition
  • Alternative diets (e.g., vegan/vegetarian, gluten-free, keto)

What should I expect during a consultation?

Our nutrition consultations consist of evaluations and educational sessions with a registered dietician who will learn your weight and injury history, assess your current dietary practices, and discuss with you your athletic needs and goals for the program. Our dieticians will counsel you on the relationships between nutrition, recovery, and athletic performance, and provide individualized guidance on how you can use nutrition for optimal performance and fast recovery. Follow-up sessions can be scheduled to monitor and evaluate your progress towards the goals set by you and your dietician.
